How to Build a Great Business: Quality #1 – Become a Great Businessperson
All successful businesses have 10 Qualities in common. Today we are going to focus on Quality #1 – Become a Great Businessperson.
Are you a great businessperson? What does this mean exactly? And, if you are not a great businessperson today, how do you change that or achieve this esteemed title?
Your business is a reflection of yourself. So, how does your business look? This can be an extremely tough question…look in the mirror and what do you see? Do you like what you see? Do other people like what they see in you? Do you have integrity? Are you a leader?
Are you honest? Take a closer look…
You need to set clear and written goals. Clear and concise goals are critical to achieve any type of success. You have to define what you are
looking to achieve before you can achieve it. This makes so much sense, but most people today do not set goals or write them down.
Once your goals are clear and defined, to achieve each goal will require a task last. What are the tasks required to achieve each goal? To accomplish tasks effectively and efficiently, you need to set priorities. Review the tasks and separate them into A, B, and C priorities. “A” priority are extremely important to achieving your goals and achieving long-term success. “B” priority items may be critical but are not as important as “A” items. “C” priority items would be great to accomplish if there is time. Start with A, then B, then C. DO NOT work on C items because they are easy. You can do this!
A great businessperson is positive and optimistic. I think the two quotes below are so appropriate:
“Take a 30-second vacation. Go within and focus on the positive, thereby creating an attitude built on strength, courage, and infinite possibilities.” -Keith D Harrell
“Optimists are right. So are pessimists. It’s up to you to choose which you will be.” -Harvey Mackay
Study great businesspeople that you know or admire. What do they do? How do they do it? This can be invaluable training and you will gain very important knowledge. What someone else has done, you can do, too!
Lastly, to develop into a successful businessperson and create success, you must have persistence and determination. Do not quit… do not give up. You will fail and fall down, but it is what you do with the failure and the fall. How you handle these situations that can change your life forever. Your determination must be unfailing and consistent.
So, to become a great businessperson, you need to:
1 – Work on yourself – It’s time for a Transformation!
2 – Set clear and written goals – Learn how Here!
3 – Prioritize your tasks to achieve your goals – A, B, and C items
4 – Attitude, attitude, attitude – Stay Positive!
5 – Be persistent and determined – Do Not Give Up!
So, where are you at on Items 1-5 above? Look at yourself in the mirror and start the transformation today!

Economic Recession - I Will Not Participate!
I wanted to share a quick review of a video I recently watched by Dr. Ivan Misner, who is the Founder and Chairman of BNI (Business Network International), the world’s largest business networking organization. Dr. Misner shared a recent event in his life which inspired this video and may inspire you, too.
“I absolutely refuse to participate in a recession.” – Dr. Ivan Misner
Now, listen closely as I am going to ask you to do something difficult. You need to ignore “doom and gloom” voices. Do not deny reality, but these voices are sending useless information and are urging you to be afraid. The “doom and gloom” voices are ignoring the solutions on which you need to focus on. This is freezing entrepreneurs in their tracks with good old, traditional fear. Are you relating to this?
Dr. Misner discussed a recent networking event he attended where everyone was talking about how bad the real estate business/industry was. First of all… don’t complain about how bad your business is. No one cares or they are glad (makes them feel better about how things are going for them). It all starts with the right attitude and looking for opportunities when everyone else thinks the sky is falling.
During this event, Dr. Misner came across a certain real estate agent who stated he was a having a good year. In this recession? In this economy? How can that be? The agent pulled from his pocket a button that stated, “I absolutely refuse to participate in a recession”. To combat what was going on around him, the real estate agent got creative. He began offering real estate at a discount (everything is on sale!) and revisited past clients who had previously thought the properties he was selling were too expensive. This agent had the right attitude while other agents are seeing doom and gloom.
Don’t worry about the macro economy; let someone else worry about that. You need to worry about your micro economy… where you are a vital player. There is no bailout money coming your way, is there? You need to bail yourself out.
The more you focus on fear, the more afraid you will become.
The more you focus on barriers and obstacles, the larger they will appear.
The more you focus on today’s economic doom and gloom news and headlines, the less time, energy, and faith you will have to focus on growing your thriving and well-networked business.
So, join me and many other successful business people and become someone who:
- Sees growth when others except collapse.
- Sees opportunity when others see problems.
- Sees success when others see failure.
Remember this… “I absolutely refuse to participate in a recession.” – Dr. Ivan Misner
To your success,
Andrea Petoskey

Networking Events - Achieve Success using 10 Commandments from Dr. Ivan Misner ("Networking Guru")
Dr. Ivan Misner, referred to as the “Father of Modern Networking” by CNN and the “Networking Guru” by Entrepreneur Magazine, shared the 10 Commandments of Networking an Event and how to achieve successful results. Dr. Misner is the Founder and Chairman of Business Network International (BNI), which is the world’s largest business networking organization.
Do you get “butterfly-itis” when you hear of a networking event? Do you immediately have an allergic reaction? Don’t worry… it’s not just you. Many people are uncomfortable but it doesn’t have to be scary or a waste of time when you are prepared and you follow the 10 Commandments below. Networking events can build a wealth of resources and contacts to help build your business.
Commandment #1 – Have the tools to network with you at all times.
Some of the tools include business cards, brochures, and cards of other professionals to refer.
Commandment #2 – Set a goal of the number of people you are going to meet.
If you feel motivated, set a goal of 15-20 people and get all of their business cards. If you aren’t feeling so hot, set your goal for less. Do not leave the event until you have reached your goal.
Commandment #3 – Act like a host not a guest.
The host is expected to do things for others; so, volunteer to help greet people. If you see people sitting or standing alone, then introduce yourself. At a Chamber of Commerce event, volunteer to be an Ambassador. At a BNI event, volunteer to be a visitor host.
Commandment #4 – Listen and ask questions.
A good networker has 2 ears and 1 mouth; use them proportionally. Do not assume everyone knows your business. Be specific but brief. Be an interviewer during this process.
Commandment #5 – Don’t try to close a deal.
Networking is about building and developing relationships with business people and other professionals. This is the beginning of the process, not the end of it.
Commandment #6 – Give referrals whenever possible.
Networking is based on the concept of “givers gain”; what comes around goes around. If I help you, you will help me and we’ll all do better. If you do not genuinely attempt to help others, you are not networking effectively.
Commandment #7 – Exchange business cards.
Ask for two cards from each attendee; one to keep for you and one to pass on to someone else as a referral. This sets the stage for networking to happen.
Commandment #8 – Manage your time effectively and efficiently.
Do not spend too much time with any one person (10 minutes or less). Keep in mind your goal. If you connect with someone very interesting, set up appointments for a later date/time.
Commandment #9 – Write notes on backs of business cards you collect.
This is an easy way to remember who you talked to and any pertinent information. This also makes Commandment #10 a lot easier.
Commandment #10 – Follow-up!
You can obey Commandments 1-9 religiously, but if you don’t follow-up, you will have wasted your time. Drop a note or give each new contact a call and be sure to fulfill any promises you have made.
Follow these 10 Commandments at your next networking event and you will find much greater success!
To your success,
Andrea Petoskey
P.S. Achieve the most success at your next Networking Events!
